Allergies don’t have to get in the way of your enjoyment of pet ownership, especially if you’re a dog person. The following is a list of dog breeds that are known to be best for allergy sufferers.
1. Bichon Frise
This is one of the more widely available dog breeds for allergy sufferers. The bichon frise’s double coat minimizes the amount of dander it sheds which, in turn, reduces the potential for allergic reactions to this dog.
2. Coton De Tulear
The Coton de Tulear is an intelligent, affectionate, happy, playful, loyal, curious dog and they are also easy to train and very eager to please. The Coton de Tulear has a long, soft (as cotton) and fluffy coat, and it does not trigger allergy symptoms.
3. Kerry Blue Terrier
The Kerry Blue Terrier are an intelligent, affectionate, loyal, adaptable and highly alert dog. The Kerry Blue Terrier is covered in a thick coat, ranging from dark blue to light blue gray and they are also low-shedding dogs but continue to grow throughout the year so they require regular grooming and clipping.
4. Miniature Schnauzer
The Miniature Schnauzer has eyebrows and a beard that greatly impresses people at first sight. They are also breeds of thick, soft double coat, and sheds very minimally, hypoallergenic, as their other Schnauzer brothers. The Miniature Schnauzer is also a friendly, intelligent, docile and easy to train dog. They are also suitable to play with children.
5. Chinese Crested
This is a popular show dog, but the hairless version of this breed is also popular among allergy sufferers, even though it does have some hair on its head, feet and tail.
6. Giant Schnauzer
If you or someone in your family is an allergy sufferer but you’d prefer a large dog, look no further than the giant schnauzer. Like the bichon, this dog has two coats, meaning it sheds less dander than other breeds.
7. Irish Water Spaniel
This is another large breed with two coats. The Irish water spaniel is a great family pet, and also is the best choice if you’re looking for a hunting dog.
8. Afghan Hound
The Afghan Hound has long and silky coat, very low shedding and is considered hypoallergenic. The Afghan Hound is a typical temperament dog that can be aloof and dignified, but happy and clown when playing. They also have a relatively slow “obedience intelligence”.
9. Maltese
The Maltese would not strike you as being a good dog for allergies just from looking at it, as long silky hair is its most prominent feature. However, it sheds very little, making it one of the best dog breeds for allergy sufferers. The long silky hair does require grooming, though, so take that into consideration.
10. Poodle
All the new “designer hybrid” dogs have poodle somewhere in their ancestry. For most of them, that is because the poodle makes for a dog that’s easy on allergies. Why not skip the experiments and go straight to the source? Poodles of any kind shed very little, but choose the miniature version to minimize shedding even more.
